Masha Kaleka (born Golda Malka Aufen, 1907–1975) was a poet and twice an emigrant. To escape the pogroms at the beginning of World War I, her Jewish parents and children were forced to move from Chrzanów (a city in the south of modern Poland) to Germany. From the late 1920s, the poet began publishing poems in German newspapers and joined the circle of Berlin's creative bohemia, which gathered around the famous "Romanisches Café". Her first two poetry collections, "Lyrisches Stenogrammheft" ("Lyrical Collection of Shorthand", 1933) and "Das kleine Lesebuch für Große" ("Little Reader for Adults", 1935), brought her success and wide literary fame, but in 1938 the Nazi regime recognized them as "harmful and undesirable". In the same year, Masha Kaleka, along with her second husband, musician Hemio Vinaver, and their son Stephen, emigrated to the United States.
