Ernest Hemingway's famous novel "The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta)" is considered by many to be the American writer's best work. The book is being translated by Yurka Gavruk, who first published it in Belarusian in 1976.
Today, after Russia's attack on Ukraine, reading Hemingway is once again relevant. His brutal, masculine prose, with pacifist passion, tells the story of the post-war "lost generation," young people's search for themselves in a new reality where all their former ideals and dreams have been destroyed.
The novel The Sun Also Rises (also known as Fiesta), first published in 1926, was written by Hemingway in a few months and made him famous at the same time. The work is based on real events from the author's life - his visit to the bullfight in Pamplona in 1925.
The main characters of the novel are young people who participated in the bloody battles of World War I, suffered severe injuries and lost their former life values and guidelines. They went down in history as a cynical and disillusioned "lost generation."
Hemingway depicts the disorientation of this generation in a spare prose devoid of sentimentality and flowery expressions. The author's famous "telegraphic" style is clearly manifested here. The writer hardly develops the inner lives of the novel's main characters. By hiding key details of their mental and emotional state, Hemingway conveys the fundamental emptiness of emigrant life.
