Sarajevo Marlboro

"Marlboro of Sarajevo" is a collection of poignant stories about life, love, and fear in besieged Sarajevo. Written during the war (1992–1995) to preserve the memory of a lost world, the book became a literary sensation in Europe, and now in Belarusian.

“I wrote these stories in a hopeless situation for my country, at a time when Sarajevo was under siege. It was a hopeless situation for me personally. It seemed that there was no longer a world in which I could live. I wrote the stories to preserve for myself the memory that my world had once existed. This is a very strange motive for writing. But probably the best. Everything can be taken away from a living person, except the right to talk about himself and his world. In these stories, something exists again that no longer exists in reality. And if it exists in stories, then perhaps one day it will also arise again in reality.”

According to the author himself, "Marlboro Sarajevo" is "a story about love, life and fear in a besieged city", Sarajevo during the war of 1992–1995. This is a book about the everyday existence of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, about death and pain, about humanity and hope. Belarusian is the nineteenth language into which Milenka Yergovich's first prose book has been translated, which made him famous throughout the world.
