The story in the spirit of magical realism is an interweaving of human and animal destinies, stories of struggle with wildlife and one's own nature. The heroes' serious passions unfold against the backdrop of Israel's struggle for statehood.
The novel centers on a conflict between the residents of the settlement and the grandson of pioneer Yakov Mirkin, Baruch, who has organized a commercial cemetery on public land, where burials have become fashionable for Jews around the world. What will lead to the confrontation between the Committee and the caretaker of the House of Eternity for Pioneers, where “274 grandfathers and grandmothers, one mule and one mandolin” are buried, will be learned by readers who will follow the winding paths of the plot to the end.
