Fortescue Anderson's memoirs are a very valuable source on the history of everyday, religious, social, and political life in Belarus in the mid-19th century. Having visited these lands in 1863, the author described in detail his journey, the people he met, and the events he witnessed. Of great interest are his sketches of the daily life of the then society of various social and national (primarily Jewish) groups. A significant place in these memoirs is given to the events of the 1863 uprising, to which the Englishman had no involvement, but, nevertheless, he experienced firsthand all the peculiarities of the tsarist prison and military investigation.
