“I envy children. They are allowed to believe in fairy tales, but we are not,” admits the protagonist of “Mr. A.’s Last Book.”
To pay off a debt to a creditor, the writer daily writes and reads new fairy tales to adults. But gradually, the boundaries between his texts and reality begin to blur — the fairytale world penetrates life, and life becomes a fairy tale.
Alhierd Bacharevič creates an atmosphere in this book where the magical and the unsettling coexist, where everyday life becomes mystical, and language is alive and powerful.
This is a story about fear and hope, about creativity and responsibility, about the fact that even adults need to believe in miracles — and the courage to listen to their own fairy tales.

"I envy children. They are allowed to believe in fairy tales, but we are not. More than anything in the world, adults love fairy tales, but people are ashamed to admit it," says the hero of Bacharevič's new book. To pay off a debt to a creditor, the debtor-writer writes fairy tales — and for a whole month, every evening, he reads them to shameless adults. With each passing day, the narrator's fairytale world becomes more and more real, and the reality in which the action takes place begins to turn more and more into a fairy tale — so much so that eventually the boundary between fantasy and reality is completely erased.
In “Mr. A.’s Last Book,” Bacharevič once again opens the door to his artistic world: so deceptively familiar to us from everyday life, and yet so wonderfully unreal, unsettling, magical, and terrifying.
