«Belarusian Historical and Literary Anecdote. Book 2» continues the cycle of not-so-serious-serious stories that reveal well-known Belarusian figures from an unexpected side. In this genre, documentary accuracy is not always obligatory, but instructiveness remains paramount. Anecdotes about writers, politicians, and cultural figures show their humanity, humor, and wisdom, leaving a valuable trace in the national memory.

***
This is the second book in the series of Belarusian historical and literary anecdotes. The main characters here are individuals who need no additional introduction, which is the first condition of this genre. Another condition is desirable, but not obligatory, documentary accuracy. This is the peculiarity of historical and literary anecdotes which, having a history rich in events and names, are an informal chronicle of life.

SERIOUSLY ABOUT SOMETHING SEEMINGLY NOT SERIOUS (fragment of the preface)

What is a historical anecdote, what is a literary anecdote? An instructive story from the lives of famous figures who need no further recommendation, which is the first condition of the genre. Documentary accuracy here is possible, but not obligatory: the told story might not have happened in reality – it could be a fiction or a myth, however plausible. Moreover, such an anecdote doesn't always have to be funny – instructiveness is enough. And although historical and literary anecdotes are not found in textbooks and scientific works, you don't often encounter them on the pages of memoirs and diaries, but they were, are, and will be – every era leaves its serious mark in this seemingly unserious genre. The question is whether historical anecdotes are fixed in the nation's memory?...

«THREE BIADULY»

From Boris Sachenko's book «Under the Constellation of the Sickle and Hammer»:

«What don't we save on!

Even on writing pseudonyms.

Instead of Yanka Kupala we write Ya. Kupala, instead of Yakub Kolas – Ya. Kolas, instead of Ales Harun — A. Harun... Somehow, as I was walking through the capital of our republic, I was stopped by a very intelligent-looking woman, apparently a visitor, and she asked:

– Please tell me, where is Tri Biaduly Street?

I barely realized that the woman was looking for Zmitrok Biadula Street — "Z. Biadula," as written on the signs attached to the houses...»
