1997. Major Reacher of the military police is sent to the state of Mississippi, to the small town of Carter Crossing near the military base Fort Kelham. However, the problems arose not on the base itself, but in the town itself - in an alley near a popular bar, where soldiers on leave often spend their time, the body of a young girl is found. Someone brutally killed the beauty and left her lying in a pool of blood. Who is behind the crime - a crazy soldier or someone from the local community, which, as always in the South of the United States, is divided into black and white? The local sheriff's office is unable to cope with the complex case, does not notice the connection with previous crimes, but does not want the military police to stick their nose into the investigation. So Reacher goes there, disguised as a retired soldier-a vagrant, to get a closer look at the dark and dangerous case without interference. The command wants him to secretly conduct an investigation and, in case of guilt of the military, to hide the ends in the water. But will Reacher's heightened sense of justice allow him to leave the crime unpunished? And will the choice in this case not be the end of his military career?
