Long before the "Iliad", "Odyssey", and the Bible, people were already contemplating friendship, death, fear, and immortality.
The "Epic of Gilgamesh" is a text in which human courage, the pain of loss, and the desire to overcome fate resonate with incredible power even millennia later. It is not just an ancient myth, but a living testament to how early humanity began to seek the meaning of its existence.
***
The "Epic of Gilgamesh", which in various linguistic and narrative versions was composed in the first half of the 3rd to the second half of the 2nd millennium BC, is perhaps the oldest epic work in world literature and at the same time the most famous text of ancient Mesopotamian culture. This is only a small part of a large number of Babylonian epics, but it is the most significant, as it has its own original "passionary philosophy": a combination of self-analysis, strong passion, and an incredible sense of adventure and restlessness.
The translation of this edition is largely based on the Akkadian "Ninevite version", whose most probable author was the exorcist Sîn-lēqi-unninni from Babylon, who lived around the 12th century BC.
Addressed to all who are interested in classical literature.
