EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

My Godmother

Do you know my godmother? She lives on the top floor of the tallest building in the city. Moreover, this building stands on a hill above the river. And so, from her apartment, the entire city is visible. Guests often visit my godmother just to enjoy the view from the window. True, not everyone has the courage to look from such a height. Especially for these guests, my godmother brews mint tea – it's calming. The timid ones drink a cup or two of fragrant tea – and their fear vanishes as if by magic.

– Look, look! – they clap their hands happily, seeing the streets and houses from a bird's-eye view. – That's the conservatory! And over there – Round Square! And there – the lake!

From her apartment windows, my godmother can even see the scoreboard of the main stadium. And during football matches, you can watch the score without leaving the window and without turning on the TV. That's why avid fans, if they don't get tickets for some super-match, go to my godmother's to at least see the score on the scoreboard live.

Among my godmother's acquaintances is a pilot with vast experience. For him, the sky is home, and in the city, he feels like he's in a concrete jungle. And if he happens to get lost among the streets, he finds my godmother's house (which is not difficult at all, as it's visible from everywhere), goes up to the top floor, and from that height, determines his route through the city.

Some consider my godmother crazy because she lives so high up.

– She didn't inherit this apartment, she didn't win it in a lottery, she BOUGHT it! Paid a lot of money! To live on the top floor of a high-rise building!

But my godmother only laughs at such reasoning.

– If high-rise buildings are built, someone has to live on the top floors, she says.

My godmother isn't even bothered by the elevator, which occasionally breaks down.

– You can benefit from everything, – she reasons, climbing the stairs to her place. – I'll get home, and get some exercise at the same time!

Most of all, these reasonings delight the neighbor on the first floor. He stands firmly on the ground and therefore considers himself a substantial person.

– From those who fly in the clouds, you don't know what to expect!

That's what he says about my godmother. But she never takes offense at these words.

– I'll tell you a secret, my dear girl, – she often confides, – this neighbor is telling the truth. I don't even know what to expect from myself. It truly happens from long observations of the clouds. They change every minute. You watch them – and what fantasies don't come into your head!

There are always many guests at my godmother's house. Because my godmother believes that being friends is the most important human task. And as soon as she manages it, she immediately calls her friends. She treats everyone to tea and pies. Then the guests read poems, tell fairy tales, put on plays, draw, make something – my godmother can find an activity for everyone's liking. And I'm sure she's not crazy at all. I think my godmother is a good sorceress. Living under the clouds is the same for her as a teacher going to work at school.
