Sometimes, to change one's life, it's enough to simply step off the beaten track.
This is an ironic and touching story about a dream that takes a person beyond the familiar provincial world and transforms everyday life into a journey – with wonders, dangers, and fateful encounters.
***
A satirical novel about a man who, unexpectedly, breaks free from the rut of his ordinary life and pursues his dream. The setting is a Belarusian town. The characters are local people. This is a book of wonders and journeys about the distinguished traveler Benjamin and his devoted squire Senderl, who set off from their hometown to the fantastic lands of the East. Along the way, they encountered amazing adventures and fateful meetings.
Mendele Mocher Sforim. The name of this writer is known far beyond his native Belarus. He is the smiling pioneer of serious Jewish literature. The one who brought back the biblical language Hebrew, and also included the language of the towns – Yiddish – among the active and productive players of world literature.
The author wrote this novel in Yiddish in the 19th century, in the 20th century he rewrote it in Hebrew, and now, in the 21st century, after translations into numerous languages of the world, a Belarusian version is being released, prepared by the Center for Belarusian-Jewish Cultural Heritage in cooperation with Logvinau Publishing House. Illustrations were done by the artist Mitia Pislak.
