This text marks the beginning of the European tradition of understanding the world through words.
Hesiod not only narrates the origin of the gods and the order of the universe but also speaks on behalf of humanity – those who work the land, suffer, observe, and draw conclusions. This is one of the first voices in literary history that simultaneously resonates as myth, instruction, and personal testimony.

Hesiod (late 8th – early 7th centuries BCE) is the first known Ancient Greek rhapsode poet, the founder of didactic epic poetry, and the author of the poems "The Origin of the Gods (Theogony)" and "Works and Days," as well as a number of other works from which only fragments are known today. He was the first in Greek poetry to identify himself as an individual and to state his name. Hesiod acts as a prophet, "called" by the Muses to proclaim eternal truths, and also as a person experienced in life, well-versed in the specifics of
working the land.
It is addressed to a wide readership.
