The book by Swedish writer and artist Sara Lundberg, "The Bird in Me Flies Wherever It Wants," received the prestigious August Prize in 2018 and was recognized as the best children's book of the year in Sweden.

This is the story of a girl who dreams of leaving home to study and become an artist, inspired by the life and work of Swedish artist Berta Hansson.

ABOUT THE BOOK

What if it seems impossible to live as others expect you to? What if the only one who understands you dies? What if you are caught between childhood and adulthood, unable to express your desires in words?

In the early 1900s, a girl named Berta was born in the village of Hammerdal in Sweden. More than anything in the world, she loved to draw and dreamed of becoming an artist.

But at that time, getting an art education was extremely difficult, especially for a girl from a simple peasant family.

Berta had to help with chores when her mother fell ill with tuberculosis. But what about dreams and desires? Would they come true?

Sara Lundberg's book "The Bird in Me Flies Wherever It Wants" is a story inspired by the life, work, letters, and diaries of Swedish artist Berta Hansson.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

Dad calls me again. He shouts "Berta!", it sounds like "heart". It's as if I don't hear him.

When I curl up into a ball, I become like a sleeping bird. Like the one I made from blue clay. I should give it to Mom.

I think if I were a bird, I could fly away. From our village. To another life. To where I would be who I am. Where no one shouts at me or thinks I'm a clumsy oddball.

"You can't just leave," says Julia, the oldest and smartest of us. Gunna is also older than me, but only by a year. She's not as diligent as Julia. And I'm completely hopeless. At least, that's what Dad thinks. And then there's Nisse, our younger brother. But he's very small.

Soon it will be autumn, and we have a lot of work. We all help, but Dad does the most...
