STORY FROM THE BOOK

ZHUCHOK

What a piece of news! Overnight, the ewe lambed and gave birth to two lambs. Beautiful, in black coats. The mistress was happy, the master was happy, and I too jumped for joy, even stroking the lambs. But the next day, Grandma Aniuta wailed:

“Oh, trouble with our twins...”

“How do you know?” Grandpa Dzmitrok asked.

“Because one of them is crying, incessantly crying...”

Hearing this, we hurried to the barn. We opened the door, peered into the dark pen... One lamb, clinging to the ewe, was suckling milk, while the other stood like an orphan, crying pitifully:

“Baa-aa-aa!... Baa-aa-aa!...”

“Didn’t she accept it?” the master asked, alarmed.

I took the lamb in my arms and brought it to its mother. But she pushed it away with her forehead and wouldn’t let it near her.

“Oh, you foolish thing!...” Grandpa Dzmitrok got angry. “You don’t want to feed your child? Then I’ll make you by force!...”

We caught the ewe, pinned her to the ground, and placed the lamb next to her. It immediately latched onto the udder, its tail even trembling. In short, we fed the hungry Zhuchok – that's what Grandpa called the lamb. But what to do next? You can't hold a stupid ewe every day. Luckily, the cow had enough milk: for the calf, and for the lamb... Grandpa Dzmitrok became Zhuchok’s substitute mother. He began to feed the rejected lamb from a bottle. When the lamb saw Grandpa, it would nudge his knees, as if to say, feed me faster! If the old man went to the shop on his bicycle, Zhuchok would run after him through the village like a dog. And he would always get a treat – a crust of bread. Not just one, because everyone who came out of the shop treated Grandpa's fostered lamb. For this, he would kiss everyone’s hand and wasn’t ashamed in the slightest.
