EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

The teacher gave the students homework — each was to draw a flower. At first, Mariyka thought the assignment was easy. The girl drew well, and moreover, she knew and loved many different flowers. In early spring, she loved dandelions and marsh marigolds, in summer — catchflies and cornflowers, in autumn — dahlias and asters... Which of these flowers was the most beautiful,
the most beloved?

Outside the window now it was not spring, not summer, and not autumn, but a cold winter, white snowdrifts, and the only flowers were those drawn by the frost on the windowpane.

The girl thought and chose all evening and then, in bed, falling asleep, she also thought. And she dreamt of a transparent summer day, bathed in sunlight, filled with birdsong, a meadow resembling an expensive variegated carpet — so many flowers were on it... And when she, barefoot and light, stepped on this soft carpet, the flowers bowed to her and each boasted of its beauty. Of course, it was a dream, so the flowers could talk. Their voices flowed like the quiet gurgle of a stream, the morning song of a lark, the light rustle of a breeze playing with young foliage...
